NAT29National/PoliticsTribal refugees to play crucial role in Mizoram pollsBy Sujit ChakrabortyAizawl/Agartala, Nov 19 IANS About 35,000 Reang tribal refugees, sheltered in Tripura camps for the past 11 years following ethnic clashes with the majority Mizos, will play a crucial role in the Dec 2 assembly polls in Mizoram.The Reangs, also called Bru, are recognised as a primitive tribe and constitute about 10 percent of Mizoram's one million population. Clashes with the Mizos in October 1997 forced them to flee to Tripura."We have fielded three candidates in the Mamit, Kolasib and Lunglei districts in southern and eastern Mizoram to have our representatives in the assembly to ensure fulfilment of the hopes and aspiration of the Reang people," said Elvis Chorkhy, president of the Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum MBDPF."The total number of voters among the Reang tribal refugees who received the Electors Photo Identity Cards EPIC are 6,479, while the total number of refugees included in the electoral list are 8,061 as per the draft electoral rolls of 2008," Lalhmingthanga, joint chief electoral officer, told reporters. Chorkhy alleged that due to the conspiracy of the ruling Mizo National Front MNF more than 8,000 tribal refugees could not enrol their names in the voters list and were going to be deprived of the right to exercise their adult franchise.Lalhmingthanga said: "The Election Commission of India ECI has not yet taken any decision to enroll about 7,800 more people in the electoral roll even though the issue has been referred to the commission."The poll panel is expected to make special arrangements for the refugees to cast their votes.Top MNF, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party BJP leaders, including BJP president Rajnath Singh, have visited the refugee camps in northern Tripura and Reang dominated areas in Mizoram and urged the tribals to caste their votes in favour of their candidates.The BJP's Tripura observer, Darshan Singh, has been camping in the refugees camps to ensure maximum number of tribals vote in favour of the party's seven candidates.The Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI-M has alleged that the Congress has been distributing money among the refugees to purchase their votes."The All India Congress Committee AICC has allocated Rs.3.2 million to buy the votes of tribal refugees and Tripura Pradesh Congress president Samir Ranjan Burman Monday visited the refugee camps along with the money," a CPI-M spokesman told reporters in Agartala.After 14 rounds of talks, the Mizoram government and the militant Bru National Liberation Front BNLF signed an agreement in April 2005 to resolve the ethnic crisis, leading to the surrender of about 1,040 militants belonging to the BNLF and Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram BLFM.Both the outfits had been fighting to set up an autonomous council for the Reang refugees.--Indo-Asian News Service490 Words*19111524

Seven persons die of cold in quake-hit Balochistan
Islamabad, Nov 17 ANI: At least seven people, including a child and five women, died of chilling cold in the earthquake-hit Karezat tehsil of Balochistan province in Pakistan.Quoting a TV report, the Daily Times reported that temperature in the area had fallen to minus 10 degree Celsius, but people have not yet been given tents to protect them against the intensifying clod. Meanwhile, the International Labour Organisation ILO has started a programme titled 'Cash for Work' through Taraqee Foundation in the villages of Ziarat district, Balochistan, worst affected by earthquake.The idea is to enable people to come out of the trauma and in the process also earn some quick bucks.ILO Country Director Donglin Li said by Sunday that the organisation had employed 86 men for removal of debris and 66 women for management of camp.He said that through the programme the ILO had helped the earthquake-affected people start work immediately to overcome their trauma as well as increase their income. "This is a quick means to inject cash into the already demonetised economy and help the affected people quickly start rebuilding their lives," the country director said. ANI

London, Nov 17 ANI: Weighing 33 stone, a schoolgirl, who was declared the fattest teenager in Britain, has lost six stone in just 10 weeks after enrolling into the world's leading weight loss camp in the US.Georgia Davis from Aberdare, South Wales, was the most obese girl ever treated at the Wellspring Academy. And now, the 15-year-old has miraculously lost six stones in just ten weeks in the academy."I haven't felt this happy in a long time. I knew I had to make a change because doctors told me I was dying. My mum is ill and I need to be fit enough to look after her," British tabloid The Sun quoted Georgia as speaking from the camp in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains.She added: "This environment is very different to the one I left behind in the UK and it has inspired me to begin the transformation. I'm determined to leave here looking and feeling like a different person." Georgia's weight skyrocketed after she developed a food addiction, which she blamed on her dad's death when she was five. The girl, with size 38 and having Type 2 diabetes, was even banned from her school canteen for over-eating. However, the NHS ruled the teen was too young for gastric band surgery, slimming pills or gym membership, thus leaving no hope for mum Lesley, 53.And that's when a nurse recommended Wellspring- a health and fitness camp for the world's most obese kids-to which Georgia enrolled after being spurred on by friends and family, and with funding from well-wishersShe lost an impressive 19 pounds almost one and a half stone in her first week at the college. In just one month on her new healthy eating and exercise regime, she was told her life-threatening Type 2 diabetes has disappeared. Georgia said: "Thanks to my new diet and exercise routine I no longer have to take drugs for my diabetes or do glucose testing. Doctors have told me this should continue as long as I stick to the programme." Today, Georgia has shrunk from a size 38 to 32. ANI
